Building Rapport: Special Operations Soldiers Draw the Interest of Future Operators at the Army Ten-Miler Expo

Army Special Operations Forces are often shrouded in mystery. Most of us know very little about these elite forces that perform their important missions around the globe in austere and distant locations. Movies and television only highlight part of the skills the Special Forces, Civil Affairs, and Psychological Operations Soldiers possess.

It is true, Special Operations Soldiers are tough, professional and capable fighters. They also think and adapt on the fly to any situation they may develop. However, the most important skill these Soldiers have, we don’t see. Special Operations Soldiers work with people. They must be able to talk and interact with local leaders as well as the people within the areas they operate. “The ability to build rapport is the most effective tool in our arsenal,” said CPT Andrew Mayville, a detachment commander in the 7th Special Forces Group. This skill is the skill showcased at the Army Ten-Miler Expo. For two days at the D.C. Armory, Special Operations Recruiters and Operators from all of the Special Operations mission sets, Special Forces, Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations displayed this important skill.

These highly trained Soldiers spend time interacting with people of all ages and showing them the equipment they use and explaining the skills needed to join Special Operations.

Whether it’s Special Forces, Civil Affairs or Psychological Operations, building rapport enables the operators to form the relationships they need to accomplish their missions. They are language and culture experts. They use this knowledge to build and develop relationships with the local people and work within the local cultures. “At the end of the day the core of Special Forces is the human dynamic,” said Mayville.

“Humans are our biggest assets,” CPT Mayville said. Right now, Army Special Operations Forces are looking for Soldiers to join their teams.
